A day in the life...

Hey what's up...I'm over here getting settled in. Setting up the studio. Getting my home improvement on. So back and forth to Home Depot I go, haha.

I'm ready to do a little painting. My little sister is really great with interior decorating, etc. But it's her senior fall so she's like off the map. Sigh. Where are my gay boys when I need them?!

Listening to Third Eye Blind. Gotta love Pandora radio. Anywho. Thanks for staying tuned. I have a new release coming for you guys REALLY SOON, so look out for that.

An Angel Returns to Heaven (RIP Aaliyah)

9 years ago today my whole life changed when I heard one of my living idols passed away (RIP Babygirl)...only to have my sister Left Eye go right after her...and then Sept 11. It was the beginning of a new year at a new school. In Fall of 2001, I decided that every day I would express love and live my life to the fullest, and I haven't looked back since.

Fat Beats Closing its Doors

Another dope venue/retail spot bites the dust. Yes I was sad when Virgin Megastore went out of business and when the only 2 bookstores in my town closed their doors. It's really hard to take.

As a young person, I've spent many a day soul searching through the stacks at independent establishments. It seems like recently every season has brought with it the end of a legacy.

While I don't believe Fat Beats and establishments like them are gone forever, I do feel a subtle shift in the game that's leaving hip hop fans and artists alike with more questions than answers on where to get hot shit and how to get our product to our fans.

It is a question that will require us to reimage and reimagine hip hop consumption and distribution on a micro and macro scale.

Let the work begin.

Made With Love

I had a really awesome time last night at Made with Love Cafe in Downtown Jersey City. I was invited to perform at the Ladies on the Mic Pride Month Showcase. There was a really dope energy in the room, and I all of the performers did great.

It was also cool to preview some new material for a smaller group. Shout out to the familiar faces in the audience. Thanks for all your love and support.

Inspiration and The Queen

So I was listening to J. Cole's The Warm Up. I have to say I am both impressed and inspired. You really gotta respect the indie grind and what it takes to spit truth into ones rhymes. He really puts his heart, hopes, and dreams out there, and that's admiral nowadays when you see little of that in the mainstream market.

But that's our responsibility as indie artists and fans of independent arts and media--to support what we love.

That being said, I picked up the new book from Queen Latifah, Put on Your Crown. Can't wait to get into it!

Harlem Pride Festival

Hey what's good! It's been a minute since I've made a post. My bad! I've been doing so much traveling. Most recently, we were up in Harlem rocking the FIRST annual Harlem Pride Festival. It was truly an honor to usher in the second wave of the Harlem Renaissance. Never sleep on Harlem---definitely my home away from home.

Ladies were on point too ;) Shout out to Princess Janae for being the hostess with the mostest. She had me dyin!

Also, shout out to King Jabbar, Lester Green, Last-O, Kaos, and Shorty Roc. It was really dope meeting yall. Much love fam.

May Day

I'm so happy today. There's so much positive and creative energy in the air. Expect great things in the near future. I've been working on new material and we're coming hard for DC Pride this year. Shows gonna be dope.

Photoshoot in two weeks, 2 graduations to attend, and my sister's 17th birthday party. Bananas! But I'm gonna keep you guys up on everything.

Hip Hop is Geeky

Between the high tech gadgets and toys (studio equipment) and nuanced formulas and alchemy (beatmaking), hip hop production is creatively scientific and scientifically creative...just like any other fine artform.

I've always had a love for expression and pushing buttons (ladies ;). Jk, but for real I think most musicians at some point in their lives had a natural aptitude for math and/or the sciences.

Also most tech geeks are heavy into hip hop and electronica. I can dig it, being a former "mathlete" who still works through trig problems from time to time (gotta help my lil sis w her homework, tu sabes). There's something really beautiful about math and music and harmony and those who get it, get it.

So for all you geeky hip hop kids, this post is for you. Now go gaze at some fractal art, puff a tree, and throw on some trip hop.

Where did spring go?

Man it is seriously brick out here all of a sudden. It's been so nice. Still and all I've had a great time today. Went out and got a new pair of running shoes. Gotta get right for this photoshoot.

In between my day job and taking care of family I've been working on a couple new tracks and getting ready for the shows I have this spring.

This year's pride season is gonna be a good one. I can feel it.

New Studio

So I'm getting ready to move into a new studio space. This is just the change I needed. Sometimes you need a change of space, a change of scene.

I have snippits of songs and sheets of lyrics, and it's time to get back to the drawing board.

Also, expect a couple remixes and mashups in the near future.

Family Is...not just a crew

Family is that undeniable feeling of belonging to something bigger than the sum of who you are and your possessions.

My family definitely played me out when I came out of the closet, and they still deny me til this day. But that doesn't mean I don't know what family is or that I don't feel familial ties all around me.

This evening I was fortunate to break bread with some really amazing people. It was really dope. A couple weeks ago I performed with a group of people who I'd be proud to call my family.

While I believe in the DIY approach, you can not underestimate the power of a team.

Behind the Scenes

I've always been drawn to behind-the-scenes work. From the first plays I went to as a child I would stare at the stage hands who worked tirelessly in the dark between scenes.

In high school I did stage lighting for dance performances and dramatic productions.

Then it was radio, which is 100% behind the scenes since it's all audio. In comes dj-ing and producing and bam, an artist is born.

Been writing all my life. It's the way I deal. Nothing can free me like my pen. So even when I spit in front of tons of people, I'm spitting something that was created...behind the scenes, and it's a beautiful thing.

I love it and need it and thank you for being here to receive it.

New Energy, Fresh Perspective

Today I woke up early and caught the sunrise from the backyard. It was nice. I thought about the future and things look bright. There is a fresh energy in the air. Everyone feels it. "2010 let's get it" is all we hear people saying. This energy is real and it fuels me.

Feeling It

So I'm at the 9-5 on my lunch break. It's pretty chill today. 46 degrees today and the warmest it's been all year. The weather definitely has me thinking about spring and summer and rockin shows. This weekend I was in the studio working one some new joints and started singing out of nowhere.

Long Days and Late Nights

Happy New Year! 2010 is here, and we're officially back in business. My holidays were dope. Birthday was hot. Saturday Dec 26, me and the fam were out at Club Cache in NYC. Shout out to DJ Mary Mac and LezPlayProductions for making it a night to remember.

After all of the festivities of the New Year, which included the best new years house party of the decade (shout out to stephanie and her lovely ladies for). Mad fun.

That was mad fun and all but now it's back to my business/creative grind now.
